He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief,
but was strengthened in faith,
giving glory to God,
and being fully convinced
that what He had promised
He was also able to perform.
My blog post “It Happened 30 Years Ago” referred to “My Testimony” of how I became a Christian. Today’s post will take us a little further back in time.
It happened 40 years ago, in 1982, that I have received three wonderful presents from my Grandma:
- a beautiful German hymnal,
- a gorgeous white handkerchief,
- and the lovely bookmark you see at the top of this page.
Sadly, I have lost the hymnal and the handkerchief during one of my many, many moves. The bookmark, however, is still inside my Bible. Beneath the picture of a pink flower you can read the following words:
WAS GOTT VERHEISST,
DAS KANN ER AUCH TUN.
The literal translation would go something like this:
WHATEVER GOD PROMISES,
THAT HE CAN ALSO DO.
The words are taken from Romans 4:21. Interestingly, in the German Luther Bible version the verse is translated into the present tense while in the English versions it is written in the past tense. I think that the present tense suits this verse just well. 🙌
For a long time, I did not think much about the bookmark, and I did not even remember of having it. Then, a few years back now, while facing a tremendous hardship, I came across it again. It happened during a time when my faith in God was really put to the test. Reading the words on this bookmark was honey to my soul. They were exactly what I needed to “hear” (read) at that time to get a hold of the knowledge that God is above ALL powers, above ALL people, above ALL situations. Hallelujah!
Ever since, I’m keeping this bookmark in my Bible now as a reminder of God being able to perform.
Trust in Christ the LORD and His Promises today.
