The LORD reigns;
Let the peoples tremble!
He dwells between the cherubim;
Let the earth be moved!
The LORD is great in Zion,
And He is high above all the peoples.
Let them praise Your great and awesome name—He is holy.
Moses and Aaron and Samuel called upon His name, verse six says. They called upon the LORD, and He answered them. Imagine, God Almighty, the One who is perfect and holy, answers His people when they call upon His name.
He does not only answer, but as verse eight of this psalm says, He is also a God who forgives:
You answered them, O LORD our God;
You were to them God-Who-Forgives,
True, He is Love, full of compassion, and ready to forgive. We must never forget, though, that He is holy. Sin, from the smallest to the greatest, cannot be overlooked or excused. Never! God, however, spares His people at their request.
That is not the whole verse, though. Verse eight continues:
Though You took vengeance on their deeds.
Matthew Henry comments on this verse:
“Thou wast a God that wast propitious for them (so Dr. Hammond), for their sakes, and sparedst the people at their request, even when thou wast about to take vengeance of their inventions, that is, when thy wrath was so highly provoked against them that it was just ready to break in upon them, to their utter overthrow.”
All you have to do is call upon the name of the LORD! God listens if you call Him; He will forgive you when you humble yourself and ask Him of His forgiveness. He is mighty to save you. Hallelujah!
Oh precious soul. Remember, that at this side of the Cross especially, never to fail to praise Him, exalt Him, and worship Him for what He has done. For God made Christ the LORD, who knew no sin, to be sin for you that you might become the righteousness of God in Him (2 Corinthians 5:21).
Call upon the LORD. Exalt and worship Him today.
