Happy Birthday

And it came to pass the third day,
which was Pharaoh’s birthday,
that he made a feast unto all his servants:
and he lifted up the head of the chief butler and of the chief baker among his servants.

(Genesis 40:20)

LORD Jesus we praise You for You are the Word of God the Father, the Word that became flesh and dwelt among us, the Word which has been sent to heal us and to deliver us from our destructions. Thank you, precious Saviour. Reach out to us on this Christmas Day, and enable us to worship You in Spirit and in Truth. In Jesus’ powerful name we pray. Amen.

Yes, birthdays are days to celebrate the one whose birthday it is. Sure, many times the guests and workers at the party will get to enjoy the host’s birthday as well. But, say, who would enjoy his or her birthday if the others are too busy with other things all day long?

Imagine… It’s my friend’s birthday, but I’m too busy to remember. She came to my house to pick me up so I can join her celebrating this wonderful special day at her house. It’ Christmas Day, so I’m quite busy, you know, preparing potatoes and coleslaw salads, baking a pumpkin pie, and arranging the turkey and the stuffing into the pan so it can go into the oven soon. Oh, and then, I need to clear off the kitchen’s countertop and clean a few more areas and spots inside my home.

All the while… My friend waits patiently, and after a short stay at the front door she grabs a chair to sit down at the kitchen table. She tries to talk to me, but I’m only getting half of what she is trying to tell me. I keep putting her off by saying: “Let’s wait until I’ll come to your house again.”

It’s getting late, two hours have gone by, the clock is ticking, and I’m still not done with all the preparations and baking and cooking — and there is so much left to do. Oh no! When will I find the time to wrap these few more presents I bought yesterday?

I turn around looking into the sad eyes of my friend who stood up and mentioned something about her special birthday. “Don’t worry, yes, I will remember you,” I said turning around to walk into the other room to pick up the clothes the children had left on the floor —

All I heard was a quite shut of the front door. My friend left, and I wonder why she just could not wait another few minutes for me to get things in order at home…

Imagine, today really IS a friend’s special birthday:

“Happy Birthday, Christine!”

And, yes, it also happens to be on a very special Birthday which happened more than 2000 years ago:

“Happy Birthday, Jesus!”
