Pride Comes and Goes

When pride comes, then comes shame;
But with the humble is wisdom.

(Proverbs 11:2)

LORD Jesus we praise You for by You and through You comes Wisdom into our life. Forgive us whenever we are struggling with pride and thinking of ourselves more highly than we should. Help us, O God we pray, to put You — and You alone — first. Guide us, we ask, and make us grow in our knowledge of You and in Wisdom of what to do when times are good and especially while times are tough. Guard our hearts, O LORD, and lead us that we may bring glory to You in all we say and do. In Jesus’ precious name we pray. Amen.

Have you ever wrestled with pride after receiving good news? I have, more than one time I’m afraid. Learning more about the dangers of pride has been one of the careful lessons that I had to learn during our roller coaster ride of house hunting.

There was this possible move into an old farmhouse set before us. I was thrilled! Everything seemed to be working out just fine. What remained to be settled was the internet connection, but, of course, we were quite sure that it would be working out. Why shouldn’t it? That was, however, only one of the proud moments that scratched the surface back then.

More importantly, I had to deal with a much bigger issue of pride rising up that time — a danger within my own heart. You see, I discovered that I was going to have something way better and of far more value than one of my enemies keeps bragging about. I kept carrying out moving boxes while having that blessing on my mind.

I soon had to recall today’s proverb and remember that when pride comes shame will follow. My shame, even if only inside of myself, followed, when I had to reverse the move and bring the moving boxes back into our current home. The move into the old farmhouse did not work out after all. What a shame!

What kind of pride are you struggling with these days?

Remember that wisdom is with the humble today.
