The Heart of the Home and Her Household

She is not afraid of snow for her household,
For all her household is clothed with scarlet.
She watches over the ways of her household,
And does not eat the bread of idleness.

Proverbs 31:21,27

Last week, in Monday’s blog post called The Home, I mentioned how the LORD must build our home or else we labor in vain. He is also the One who has to watch over and protect it. In the follow-up named The Head Of the Home I challenged us to ask ourselves why the husband-wife-relationship is so important and answered with a comment made on Ephesians 5:23 by F.B. Meyer. This week’s posts will be about the heart of the home.

The Heart of the Home and Her Household

I have chosen theses verses of Proverbs 31* to point out two things:
1) We are not to be afraid, and
2) We ought to be in charge.

Take note, please, that these verses (and that’s my point) are talking about the (virtuous) woman and her household and not about headship. She is not the head but the heart of her home. Her role, however, is not at all less important. To the contrary, there is a lot that is being asked of her. Her role requires her to remain confident and be able to keep a good eye on how things are running inside of her home.

The virtuous woman is not afraid because she knows that her household will be taken care of by God. She does not use that as an excuse, though, to become lazy. No, instead, she wants to make sure that she will be a good steward of the resources and talents that God is giving her to look after her household. She gently and lovingly takes charge over what is flowing into her home and what is flowing out of it. In other words, she is the heart of the home.

Don’t be afraid. Trust in the LORD to provide for you and your household today.
