That They May Know

That they may know that this is Your hand—
That You, LORD, have done it!

Psalm 109:27

LORD Jesus we praise You for You are holy, all powerful, and mighty to save. Forgive us, O God we pray, whenever we belittle the urgency of studying Your Word. We are free to choose from many printed and digital versions of the Bible; and we are free to read Your Word every single day. Forgive us, precious LORD Jesus, for we so often take this freedom for granted. Help us to diligently seek You in the Scriptures. Enable us to talk about Your words and Your works when we are at home, when we are on our way, when we lie down, and when we rise up. Teach us how to bind them as a sign on our hand, how to let them be as frontlets between our eyes, and how to write them on our doorposts of our house and on our gates. In Jesus’ mighty name we pray. Amen.

Yesterday we read one of my favorite stories, the story of how Elijah and the false prophets of Baal met on Mount Carmel. There was a sort of a competition going on that time. Elijah challenged the other prophets to call on the name of their gods, and then he would call on the name of the LORD. “And the God who answers by fire,” said Elijah, “He is God.”

All the people agreed, and, after everything was set up on their altar, the false prophets began to call on the name of Baal. “O Baal, hear us!” they shouted, but nothing else happened. So Elijah began to mock them and said that they might have to shout louder, or, perhaps, their god is on a journey or sleeping. Whatever they did, it did not work — for there was no answer by fire.

Then it was Elijah’s turn. He put everything in order on the altar which he built in the name of the LORD. There was a trench all the way around it. Elijah said to fill water pots with water and to pour the water on the sacrifice and on the wood — not once, not twice, but three times — and the water ran all around the altar and also filled the trench.

And it came to pass, at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near and said,
“LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel,
let it be known this day
that You are God in Israel and I am Your servant,
and that I have done all these things at Your word.
Hear me, O LORD, hear me,
that this people may know that You are the LORD God,
and that You have turned their hearts back to You again.”
Then the fire of the LORD fell and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood and the stones and the dust, and it licked up the water that was in the trench.
Now when all the people saw it,
they fell on their faces; and they said,
“The LORD, He is God! The LORD, He is God!”

1 Kings 18:36-39 (emphasis mine)

Know that the LORD, He is God today.
