Proverbs 31 Woman — Part 10

She stretches out her hands to the distaff,
And her hand holds the spindle.

(Proverbs 31:19)

LORD Jesus, we praise You for this new day — a day that You have made. Forgive us, O God we pray, whenever we place more value on things of this world and on others beside You. Help us to hear what the Spirit says — what it is that You want us to see, hear and do. In Jesus’ mighty name we pray. Amen.

This is not an easy verse, I’ll have to admit. At first reading we might not find much of an application to our lives in it. I mean, which one of us is still making use of a distaff? Most of us are buying clothes that are already made. Some of us might get the resources to make clothing at home. With all the wool and thread and fabrics available to us these days, which one of us, though, would go through the time and effort of spinning wool?

READ — Let’s read the verse again:

She stretches out her hands to the distaff,
And her hand holds the spindle.

ENGAGE — Think: What does the verse say? (Copy/Paste)

Toward what does she stretch out her hand?

What does her hand hold?

I like Matthew Henry’s comment when he writes:

She lays her own hands to the spindle, or spinning-wheel, and her hands hold the distaff (Pro 31:19), and she does not reckon it either an abridgement [shortened version]of her liberty or a disparagement [regard of being of little worth]to her dignity, or at all inconsistent with her repose.

APPLY — Think: How does this apply to you?

What important tasks are there for you to do at home? Toward what (or toward whom) do you need to stretch out your hand? What or whose hand do you need to hold?

DO — Think: What are some of the ways you could apply this verse?

During times like the one we are facing at the moment resources and services are no longer available in an abundance as they used to. We have to improvise. How about making it our custom to lend a helping hand — when things get back to “normal” again?

With many of the barbers and beauty saloons closed, can you cut your family’s hair? Sure! You say that you are not able to? There are courses that teach you how to cut your man’s and your children’s hair. Find a suitable book, course, or video online to learn how to do that.

Does one of your family members suffer from a food allergy? Learn how to bake and cook using different and suitable ingredients.

Of course, you can! I’m sure you are “worth it.” God has given you this specific family, and you are the right one for your husband and the best mom for your children.

What is it that God wants you to do today?
