Talents

For the kingdom of heaven is like a man traveling to a far country, who called his own servants and delivered his goods to them.
And to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, to each according to his own ability; and immediately he went on a journey.

Matthew 25:14-15

LORD Jesus, we praise You for Your amazing Goodness and Mercy that You are showing toward us. We thank You that You have made so many things beautiful and perfect and available for us. Give us wisdom, O LORD we pray, to use the talents which You have given to us for Your glory. In Jesus’ precious name we pray. Amen.

Originally this blog post was intended to talk about finances only and how to use the money and materials God provided for us. While reading and studying for this post I was lead onto another way. So let’s start by building a solid foundation, and I will do a more detailed blog on finances in the near future.

Reading the two verses I have come up with the following notes:

We are His own.

It’s my life and my body and my time… Is it? We so often forget why we are here and who we belong to, don’t we? All through the Bible God calls us His own. We have been saved by Him, and we are called by His name. He is our King and we are His (maid-) servants.

All goods belong to Him.

Notice what He says in verse 14: “… delivered His goods to them.” Ultimately all things belong to Him. Colossians 1:16 says that:

For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.

We receive a certain amount of talents according to our own ability.

There is absolutely no room to judge others — whether they have been given less whether they have been given more. The LORD gives and the LORD takes away. Blessed be the name of the God most High. It is in His perfect will and time, and for His purpose, that He gives to some one talent while He gives to others more than one talent.

He went on a journey.

If someone leaves only to go on a journey he will come back. The thought that one day He will come back is exciting, but it is also a sobering one. How will we have used our time and talents during our journey here on earth?

What talent/s has He given to you?
