Whose Life Is It

For You formed my inward parts;
You covered me in my mother’s womb.
I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works,
And that my soul knows very well.
My frame was not hidden from You,
When I was made in secret,
And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed.
And in Your book they all were written,
The days fashioned for me,
When as yet there were none of them.

Psalm 139:13-16

LORD Jesus, we humbly come before You this day to ask for Wisdom and Understanding from Your Word. We stand in awe, thinking about how fearfully and wonderfully You have made each one of us. You are our Creator. Help us to understand, and to acknowledge, that all things were created by You and for You. We praise You for You are before all things and by You all things consist. Enable us to live our lives as pleasing sacrifices who will give all glory to You. In Jesus’ mighty name we pray. Amen.

We might get sad or even upset whenever we bump into people who say: “Stay out of it! This is my body and my life. I can do with it however I please.” What is the viewpoint we have on our own bodies and lives, though? Who do we say we belong to? Who owns us?

Colossians 1:16-17 says that by God all things were created, and all things were created for Him, and all things exist by Him. That’s quite clear and powerful, isn’t it? But let’s get a bit more personal.

You know, I really love and prefer the KJV of Psalm 139:13 which says:

For thou hast possessed my reins:
thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb.

Possess? Yes. If we look up the original word for “possess” in the Greek it is: qânâh. That word expresses that God has made us to purchase/buy us and teach to keep us. Now, how wonderful is that? Hallelujah!

Thinking of an upcoming surgery and worrying about some risks, and dwelling on the thought what could happen if, I have found great comfort in these words:

Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed.
And in Your book they all were written,
The days fashioned for me,
When as yet there were none of them.

Psalm 139:16

Imagine that! All the days of your life were written in God’s Book before you were even born. There is nothing, absolutely nothing, outside God’s control. He made you, and He will take care of you, and He loves you. Yes, He loves you that much that He has sent His one and only Son to die for your sins so that you can spend eternity with your God and Creator. Amazing thought, isn’t it?
