Head Covering

Head covering — What is this all about? Never heard of it? Where do you find it in the Bible? Today’s post serves as an introduction — to give a hint and food for thought.

Monday we received three parcels: one from Germany, one from the UK, and one from the USA. I had ordered some wool and needles in Germany to crochet and knit, so that’s one of the packages delivered on Monday. Our dear friend from the UK, you know the one I quoted in The Food Which God Recommends, he has surprised us by sending us a cookbook for the slow cooker, so that was in the mail as well. And then the mailman handed over a third small envelope which had come across the Ocean all the way from the States. It contained the head coverings I had ordered from GarlandsOfGrace.com

So what is this head covering thing all about?

Here are the verses from God’s Word to give you food for thought. They are found in 1 Corinthians 11

3 But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.
4 Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonors his head.
5 But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, for that is one and the same as if her head were shaved.
6 For if a woman is not covered, let her also be shorn, But if it is shameful for a woman to be shorn or shaved, let her be covered.
7 For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man.
8 For man is not from woman, but woman from man.
9 Nor was man created for the woman, but woman for the man.
10 For this reason the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels.
11 Nevertheless, neither is man independent of woman, nor woman independent of man, in the Lord.
12 For as woman came from man, even so man also comes through woman; but all things are from God.
13 Judge among yourselves. Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered?
14 Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him?
15 But if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her; for her hair is given to her for a covering.
16 But if anyone seems to be contentious, we have no such custom, nor do the churches of God.

Now understand that there are different interpretations as to what these verses exactly mean. In this post I’m not going to dig deeper into God’s Word nor explain my point of view. I will do so either bit by bit in future posts or by posting a separate page — I haven’t decided yet.

Let God Speak to You

It’s always best to have the pure Word of God speak to you. I know this is a hard and controversial topic. What I do in these cases is this:

  1. Pray. Ask God to reveal to me what He wants me to hear and do.
  2. Read what He says in His Word. Making a “new” approach (as though I had never heard nor read this passage of Scripture) and just read and work with the text. (Printing out the text helps: I can highlight, circle, write notes and questions next to it)
  3. If I don’t fully comprehend it, I’ll go through the section bit by bit and over and over again. Maybe not the same day but on the next day or during the next week.

Pray! God will lead you to His answer for you. Trust me, eventually He will! It might take a day (um, I doubt it), a week, a month, a year, a decade — however long it will take but He will guide you and you will find His answer if you will seek Him with all your heart.

No, I won’t leave you hanging there now. Today I’ll share a (direct) link to an audio file you could listen to which will give you more food for thought: Headship & Its Symbols by M. McKillen on 10th of March 2019 as taught in Gorey Christian Assembly. If you go to the Gorey Christian Assembly website you will find it under a page called “Church Matters.” There, scroll down until you’ll see the title of the audio file. Right next to it you will also find the pdf of the keynotes shared during the sermon (For private use only. Please remember the copyright and obtain permission first before making use of it in any other way.)

I hope and pray you will find this helpful in your search of head covering and be blessed by it.
